Pat pēc Baltkrievijas drošības spēku draudiem, 18. oktobrī aptuveni 30,000 cilvēku pulcējās, lai mierīgi protestētu Minskā un Baltkrievijas pilsētās. Mītiņā, ko tagad sauc par Partizānu maršu, tika aizturēti vairāk nekā 280 cilvēki un apcietināti aptuveni 237 cilvēki, lai gan avoti ziņoja par atšķirīgu skaitu. Kopš krāpnieciskajām 9. augusta vēlēšanām ir aizturēti no 12,000 līdz 13,000 baltkrievu. Drošības spēki neliecina par atkāpšanos, demonstrējot nepārtrauktu spēka demonstrēšanu pret protestētājiem un ziņojumus par plašu ļaunprātīgu izmantošanu cietumos. Mierīgie protestētāji ir atkārtoti aicinājuši Lukašenko atkāpties no amata līdz 25. oktobrim vai rīkot valsts mēroga streiku. Liekas, ka Lukašenko pamatbāze atkrīt, un to galvenokārt veido valsts darbinieki. Pēc Carnegie Europe vecākā līdzstrādnieka Tomasa De Vāla teiktā, Lukašenko atbalsts ir samazinājies līdz 26%, nosaucot viņu par “prezidentu, kuru neviens nevēlas”.

Pa to laiku Kremlis ir iekļāvis Svjaatlanu Tihanovsku viņu meklējamo personu sarakstā. Tihanovskaja kā galvenā opozīcijas kandidāte stājās pret Lukašenko pēc tam, kad viņas vīrs, slavens blogeris, tika aizliegts un ieslodzīts cietumā. Kopš 9. augusta vēlēšanām opozīcijas līdere ar ģimeni ir izsūtīta Lietuvā. Kā ziņo Krievijas ziņu aģentūra Tass, Tihanovskajas orderis arestam ir izdots gan Baltkrievijā, gan Krievijā. Krievijas Iekšlietu ministrija nav izplatījusi paziņojumu. Tikmēr Tihanovskaja regulāri tikās ar Eiropas līderiem, tostarp ar Angelu Merkeli. Putins neplāno tikties ar Tihanovskaju.

Eiropas Savienība līdz šim ir mērķējusi 40 Baltkrievijas amatpersonas un ir atteikusies atzīt vēlēšanu rezultātus. Kad Lietuva un Polija aizsargā un atbalsta opozīciju, ES valstis solidāri ar Lietuvu un Poliju atsauc savus vēstniekus Baltkrievijā. Baltkrievija ir apgalvojusi, ka Lietuva un Polija “iejaucas viņu iekšējās lietās.” Savā komentārā Tomass De Vāls aicina Eiropas Savienību sākt sagatavot palīdzības paketi Baltkrievijas atbalstam, kad notiek demokrātiska pāreja. Viņš arī ierosina ES sadarboties ar SVF, Pasaules banku, Eiropas Rekonstrukcijas un attīstības banku un Eiropas Investīciju banku, veicot koordinētus ekonomiskos centienus, lai palīdzētu Baltkrievijai pārejā uz demokrātiju.

ALJA aicina Amerikas latviešu sabiedrību atbalstīt Lukašenka atkāpšanos, turpināt nosodīt nežēlību pret miermīlīgiem protestētājiem un aicināt nekavējoties atbrīvot tos, kuri ir nepareizi ieslodzīti.

On October 18th, despite threats from the Belarusian security forces, approximately 30,000 people gathered to protest peacefully in Minsk and cities across Belarus. The rally, now called Partisan March, saw more than 280 people detained and approximately 237 people arrested, though sources have been reporting differing numbers. Since the fraudulent elections of August 9th, between 12,000 and 13,000 Belarusians have been detained. Security forces show no sign of backing down, showing continuing displays of force against protestors and reports of widespread abuse in jails. The peaceful protestors have renewed their call for Lukashenko to step down by October 25th or face a nationwide strike. Lukahenko’s core base has seemed to be falling away, predominantly composed of state workers. According to Thomas De Waal, a senior fellow with Carnegie Europe, Lukashenko’s support has dropped to 26%, calling him “the president that no one wants.” 

In the meantime, the Kremlin has put Svyatlana Tikhanovskaya on their wanted list. Tikhanovskaya ran against Lukashenko as the main opposition candidate after her husband, a famous blogger, was barred and jailed. The opposition leader has been exiled in Lithuania with her family since the August 9th elections. According to Russia’s Tass news agency, Tikhanovskaya’s warrant for arrest has been issued in both Belarus and Russia. The Russian interior ministry has not released a statement. Meanwhile, Tikhanovskaya has routinely met with European leaders, including Angela Merkel. Putin has not made any plans to meet with Tikhanovskaya. 

The European Union has thus far targeted 40 Belarusian officials and has refused to recognize the results of the election. As Lithuania and Poland protect and support the opposition, EU nations are recalling their ambassadors to Belarus in solidarity with Lithuania and Poland. Belarus has claimed that Lithuania and Poland are “interfering in their internal affairs.” In his commentary, Thomas De Waal calls for the European Union to start preparing an assistance package to aid Belarus for when the democratic transition happens. He also suggests the EU to work with the IMF, the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the European Investment Bank in a coordinated economic effort to aid Belarus in their transition to democracy. 

ALJA calls upon the American-Latvian community to support the call for Lukashenka to resign, continue to condemn brutality against peaceful protestors, and call for the immediate release of those who have been wrongly imprisoned.

“Lukašenko kungs, uz jūsu jakas ir asinis.” Tā bija zīme, kuru Madelena Miniata turēja Baltijas ceļa atcerē un Baltkrievijas demonstrācijā 2020. gada 23. augustā. Šī bija Baltijas ceļa 31. gadadiena – mierīga demonstrācija, kurā divi miljoni cilvēku izveidoja cilvēku ķēdi, kas sasniedza visas trīs Baltijas valstis. Šogad visā pasaulē notika demonstrācijas, lai solidarizētos ar Baltkrievijas iedzīvotājiem, kuri joprojām piedzīvo policijas nežēlību un dzīvo diktatūrā pēc tam, kad Eiropas Savienības prezidenta vēlēšanas tika atzītas par negodīgām.

Vašingtonā, DC, dalībnieki ieradās Lietuvas vēstniecībā un izveidoja sociāli attālinātu cilvēku ķēdi, izmantojot audumus, tradicionālās jostas un citus materiālus, lai atrastos sešu pēdu attālumā. Kamēr protestētāji stāvēja cilvēku ķēdē, garām braucošās automašīnas taurēja, lai izrādītu atbalstu. Pēc tam 300 protestētāji devās uz Baltkrievijas vēstniecību. Protestētāji pulcējās ārpus vēstniecības, turpinot pievērst autobraucēju un apkārtējo cilvēku uzmanību. Madelena Miniata komentēja atmosfēru ārpus vēstniecības: “mūsu pūlis ierīkoja abas ielas puses zem kokiem, nedaudz atbrīvojot no karstuma. Dziesmas angļu, lietuviešu un baltkrievu valodā sākās visapkārt, galu galā atrodot saliedētību. Kad demonstrācija turpinājās, cilvēkiem kļuva ērtāk; dziedājumi pārvērtās dziedāšanā, dziedāšana pārvērtās runās.” Lija Lūsis komentēja, sakot, ka “kamēr mēs protestējām tikai pilsētas kvartālā, tajā bija kas vairāk. Cilvēki visā pasaulē iestājās par Baltkrievijas iedzīvotāju tiesībām, un varēja just šo enerģiju. Kā Baltijas iedzīvotājiem, ir svarīgi turpināt cīņu par savu un savu draugu brīvību. Mums jāturpina parādīties un atbalstīt balsis, kuras Baltkrievijā tiek apklusinātas.”

26. vēl viena demonstrācija notika ārpus Baltkrievijas vēstniecības krievu valodā. Kā praktikantei, Madelenai Miniatai tika dota iespēja uzstāties JBANC vārdā.

Dedzību par Baltijas ceļu un Baltkrieviju izjuta gan dalībnieki, gan apkārtējie cilvēki, izplatot izglītību un izpratni visā DC un pasaulē. Vardarbība Baltkrievijā ir nepārtraukta realitāte, un tiem, kam ir iespēja droši izteikties, ir svarīgi turpināt to darīt, līdz Baltkrievijas iedzīvotājiem beidzot tiek dots taisnīgums.

“There is blood on your jacket, Mr. Lukashenko.” This was a sign held by Madelena Miniats at the Baltic Way- Belarus demonstration on August 23^rd, 2020. This was the 31^st anniversary of the Baltic Way, a peaceful demonstration in which two million people created a human chain that reached through all three Baltic states. This year, demonstrations were held globally to stand in solidarity with the people of Belarus who are still experiencing police brutality and living in a dictatorship after the presidential elections were deemed unfair by the European Union.

In Washington D.C., participants arrived at the Lithuanian embassy and created a socially distant human chain, using fabrics, traditional belts, and other materials to stay six feet apart. As protesters stood in the human chain, cars driving by would honk to show support. The human chain then turned into a walk, as 300 protesters walked to the Belarus embassy. The protestors gathered outside of the embassy, continuing to catch the attention of motorists and bystanders. Madelena Miniats commented on the atmosphere outside the embassy, “our crowd lined both sides of the street under the trees giving some relief from the heat. Chants in English, Lithuanian and Belarusian began all around eventually finding cohesion. As the rally went on people became more comfortable; chants turned into singing, singing turned into speeches”. Lija Lusis commented on the event saying that “while we were only protesting on a city block, there was more to it. All around the world people were standing up for the rights of the Belarus people, and you could feel that energy. As Baltic people, it’s important that we continue the fight for the freedom of ourselves and our friends. We need to continue to show up and rally behind the voices that are being silenced in Belarus.”

On the 26^th another rally took place outside the Belarus embassy and was held in Russian. Madelena Miniats was given the opportunity to speak as an intern on behalf of JBANC.

The passion of the Baltic Way- Belarus was felt by participants and bystanders alike, spreading education and awareness throughout D.C and the world. The violence is a continuous reality in Belarus, and it is vital for those who have the ability to speak out safely to continue to do so until the people of Belarus are finally given justice.

Amerikas Latviešu Jaunatnes Apvienība atbalsta mierīgos protestus, ko rīko Baltkrievijas pilsoņi, un aicina izbeigt brutalitāti pret protestētājiem kā līdzekli, lai apklusinātu viņu vārda brīvību un godīgas vēlēšanas, kas pēdējā mēneša laikā ir atkārtoti pārkāptas. 

Sestdien, 9. augustā, Baltkrievijā notika prezidenta vēlēšanas. Aleksandrs Lukašenko tika atzīts par uzvarētāju, ko Eiropas Savienība (ES) uzskatīja par negodīgu. Galvaspilsētā Minskā un citās valsts pilsētās izcēlās mierīgi protesti. Zem Lukašenko režīmas, šie protestētāji sastapa policijas brutalitāti: piekaušanu, ūdens lielgabalus, asaru gāzi, apdullināšanas granātas un protestētāju aizturēšanu. Nesen tika ziņots, ka aizturēšanas centros protestētāji vairākkārt tika spīdzināti. Daži protestētāji tika atbrīvoti 13. augustā.

14. augustā Latvijas, Lietuvas, Igaunijas un Polijas prezidenti kopīgi deklarēja pieprasījumu Baltkrievijai izbeigt policijas brutalitāti pret protestētājiem. Lukašenko ir vērsies pie Vladimira Putina, reaģējot uz pieaugošajiem protestiem. Pagaidām nav zināms, kā Putins rīkosies.

The American Latvian Youth Association supports the peaceful protests held by the citizens of Belarus and calls for the end of the brutality against the protesters as a means to silence their freedom of speech and fair elections that have been repeatedly violated during the past month.

On Saturday August 9^th, the presidential election took place in Belarus. Alexander Lukashenko was declared the winner, in a vote deemed unfair by the European Union (EU). Peaceful protests have broken out in the capital city of Minsk and other cities throughout the country. These protests were met by police brutality under the Lukashenko regime. This includes beatings, water cannons, tear gas, stun grenades and detaining protesters. It has recently been reported that in the detention centers, the protesters were repeatedly tortured and beaten. Some protesters were released on August 13^th.

On August 14^th, the presidents of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland issued a joint declaration calling for an end to the police brutality against the protesters. Lukashenko has turned to Vladimir Putin in response to the growing protests. It is currently unknown how Putin will proceed.
