Reizi gadā 16 labākās pasaules hokeja komandas sacenšas IIHF pasaules hokeja čempionātā. Rīkotājpilsētas tiek izvēlētas vairākus gadus iepriekš, un, lai gan šogad sākotnēji bija paredzēts, ka tās notiks Krievijā, IIHF ir pārcēlusi spēļu rīkotājpilsētas uz Tamperi, Somiju, kas pagājušajā gadā rīkoja kopā ar Helsinkiem, un Rīgu, Latvijā. Pēdējo reizi Rīga spēles norisinājās 2021. gadā, taču lielākā daļa līdzjutēju nevarēja ierasties stingru koronavīrusa pasākumu dēļ. Šogad spēles atgriežas, un trakie Latvijas līdzjutēji noteikti uzstāsies tradicionāli, taču neparasti skaļi!
Augstākās divīzijas komandas ir sadalītas divās grupās pa 8. Sākotnēji notiek apļa posms, kurā katra komanda spēlē ar visām pārējām nācijām savā grupā, un par uzvarām tiek piešķirti trīs punkti, par uzvaru pagarinājumā tiek piešķirti divi punkti, par zaudējumu pagarinājumā tiek piešķirts viens punkts, bet zaudējuma gadījumā – nulle. Četras labākās komandas no katras grupas iekļūst ceturtdaļfinālā un spēlējās tālāk, bet katras grupas apakšējā komanda tiek pazemināta uz nākamo divīziju. Nākamajā gadā šīs vietas aizpilda divas labākās komandas zemāk esošajā divīzijā (diemžēl Lietuva pēdējo gadu 1. divīzijas sacensībās ieņēma trešo vietu un palaida garām iespēju pirmo reizi spēlēt augstākajā divīzijā Rīgā). Latvija pēc neatkarības atgūšanas pēc augstākās divīzijas sasniegšanas ne reizi nav izkritusi! Lai gan tradicionālās lielvalsts komandas, piemēram, Zviedrija, Somija, ASV un Kanāda, parasti nodrošina vietu ceturtdaļfinālā, par ceturto vietu vienmēr notiek rūgtas cīņas. Latvija, kas šobrīd pasaules rangā atrodama 11.vietā, parasti ietilpst šajā kategorijā, kompetenti spēlējot pret vadošajām komandām, cīnoties par pēdējo ceturtdaļfināla vietu.
Turnīrs norisināsies no 12. līdz 28. maijam, un, lai gan Latvija var tikai cerēt uz tālāku turnīra posmu, pirmās 7 spēles paredzētas apļa kārtā:

Once a year, the top 16 hockey teams in the world compete in the IIHF World Hockey Championships. The host cities are chosen years in advance, and while this year was originally slated to be held in Russia, the IIHF has moved the host cities of the games to Tampere, Finland, which co-hosted last year with Helsinki, and Rīga, Latvia. Rīga last hosted the games in 2021, but most fans could not attend due to strict covid measures. This year, the games return, and the wild Latvian fans are sure to make a traditionally, yet exceptionally, loud appearance!
Teams in the top division are separated into two groups of 8. Initially, a round robin stage occurs, where each team plays every other nation in their group, with wins awarding three points, an overtime win awarding two points, and overtime loss awarding one point, and a regulation loss awarding zero. The top four teams from each group advance to the quarter-finals and finish out in bracket play, while the bottom team in each group is relegated to the next division down. The following year, these spots are filled with the top two performing teams in the division below (unfortunately, Lithuania finished third in last years Division 1 competition and missed the opportunity to play for the first time in the top division in Rīga). Latvia, after reaching the top division after regaining independence, has never been relegated! While traditional powerhouse teams like Sweden, Finland, the United States, and Canada typically secure a quarter-final berth, the fourth spot is always bitterly contested. Latvia, currently ranked 11th in the world, typically falls into this category, competently playing against the leading teams while fighting for the last quarter-final spot.
The tournament will be held from May 12th to May 28th, and although Latvia can only hope to progress to the later stages of the tournament, the first 7 games are scheduled in the round robin:
