ALJA Valde šogad ir piestrādājusi pie vairākām pārmaiņām ilgtermiņa fondam. Gribējām dalīties ar biedriem kādas pārmaiņās tika paveiktas, un ko mēs vel ceram padarīt nākošajos gados!

Kas ir ALJAs Ilgtermiņa Fonds?
ALJAs ilgtermiņa fonds ir atsevišķs no ALJAs gadskārtējā budžeta. Fondā ir iekļauti ALJAs mūžā biedra nodevas, kā arī lielāks ziedojums un pārpalikumi no iepriekšējiem ALJAs budžetiem. 2017 gadā, fondā bija apmēram $30,000.

Kā ALJA ir lietojusi ilgtermiņa fondu iepriekšējos gados, un kā tas mainīsies nākotnē?
ALJA nekad nav lietojusi fondus no ilgtermiņa fondu. Fonds ir ieguldīts ALJAs “Fidelity” kontā, un tas ir lēnam audzis pēdējos gados.
ALJA tagad cer lietot fondu lai atbalstīt sevišķus notikumus Latviešu sabiedrībā ar lielākām summām. Tie varētu ieskaitīt vispasaules latviešu kongresus, latviešu dziesmu svētkus, utt. Balvas no ilgtermiņa fonda būs atsevišķas no ALJAs ikgadējām stipendijām, un ALJA tās izdos apmēram reiz pa katriem pieciem gadiem, ja ir kāds sevišķs notikums. Ekstrēmā situācijā, ilgtermiņa fondu varētu lietot lai papildināt ALJAs budžetu.

Ko ALJA ir paveikusi pēdējā gadā ar ilgtermiņa fondu?
ALJA ir piestrādājusi pie “Investment Policy” ilgtermiņa fonda, kas nosaka fonda ieguldījuma mērķus un procedūru, kā arī kā ALJA piešķirs balvas no fonda. Mēs to esam pielikuši šim rakstam, un gribam dzirdēt jūsu domas!
Otrā pārmaiņa, kas notika šo gad ir saistīta ar ilgtermiņa fonda ieguldījumiem. Fonds iepriekš ir bijis ieguldīts ļoti konservatīvā veidā, kas mums nelikās piemēroti, ja ALJA reti izdos naudu no viņa. Mēs pārmainījām ieguldījumus fondā lai tas būtu ieguldīts, tā lai viņš var vairāk augt, konservatīvā veidā. Pārmaiņas bija apmēram sekojošas:

Kas vēl jāpadara ar ilgtermiņa fondu?
Pat, ja daudz kas tika paveikts šogad ar ilgtermiņa fondu, mūsu darbs nav pabeigts!! ALJAi ir jāpiekrīt fonda “Investment Policy,” un ir jānosaka biedru, kas strādās ar ALJAs priekšēdi un kasieri lai pārskatīt fondu ieguldījumus reizi pa gadu. ALJAi ir arī jāpārrunā fondu ar nodokĮu ekspertu.
Tālāk, ar Latvijas simtgadi un dziesmu svētkiem, ALJAi ieteica lietot balvu no ilgtermiņa fonda, lai atbalstīt šo notikumu. ALJAi nākamajā gadā būs jānoskaidro kā to vislabāk varētu izdarīt.

ALYA’s Endowment!

The board of ALYA has worked on a variety of changes to ALYA’s endowment this year. We would like to share with members what changes are in effect, and what we hope to achieve in the coming years!

What is ALYA’s Endowment?

ALYA’s endowment is separate from ALYA’s annual budget. The endowment is comprised of dues from lifelong ALYA members as well as one larger donation and a few surpluses from ALYA’s budget. As of 2017, the endowment had about $30,000 in assets. 

How has ALYA used its endowment in previous years, and how will that change in the future?

Assets from the endowment have never been used. It is held in ALYA’s Fidelity account, which has gradually earned interest in previous years.

Now, ALYA hopes to use its endowment to support unique events in the Latvian-American community that would benefit from a larger donation. These events could include global Latvian youth congresses, Latvian Song and Dance Festivals, etc. Withdrawals from ALYA’s endowment will be separate from ALYA’s annual scholarships. ALYA will draw from the endowment approximately once every four to five years, if there are appropriate opportunities. In an extreme situation, ALYA may use the endowment to support ALYA’s annual budget.

In the past year, what has ALYA achieved regarding its endowment?

ALYA has written an Investment Policy, which outlines the goals and processes of the endowment, as well as how withdrawals will be distributed. We have attached the policy documents to this article. Please share your thoughts with us!

Secondly, ALYA has made changes so that the account may generate greater return. The endowment’s previous investment policy was found to be too conservative considering the rarity of ALYA’s withdrawals from the account. Now, the endowment’s goal is to generate 5-7% real return per year, with fairly low risk, to support a larger withdrawal once every four or five years. Specifically, the endowment’s targets are:

Plans for the coming year

Although much has been accomplished in the past year, our work is not over yet! ALYA must approve the Investment policy as well as select a member who will work alongside ALYA’s president and treasurer to monitor the account annually. ALYA hopes to also consult with a tax advisor.

With the Latvian centennial celebrations and the song and dance festival approaching, ALYA has suggested using withdrawals from the endowment to support these events. It is yet to be determined how to best go about this.
